Article 29 of the Indian constitution says that “any section of India or any part there of having a distinct language, script or culture of its own shall have the right to conserve the same” The history of Bhojpuri language dates back to 7th century. More than 1000 years old! Guru Gorakhnath of naath sampraday had written Gorakhbani in the year 1100AD in Bhojpuri. The birth of Saint Kabir Das (1297) has been accepted as Bhojpuri Diwas in India and celebrated as "World Bhojpuri Day". The fact is Bhojpuri language has its origin in Madhya Pradesh from where the king of Malwa Raja Bhoj had migrated to Bhojpur district of Bihar in 300AD. 1000 years old Bhoj temple near Bhopal is a historical example of it. The name of Bhopal airport has been kept in the name of same Raja Bhoj,
“Bhoj International Airport.” Chattishgarhi, Bundeli and Nagpuri are also linked with Bhojpuri family.
Bhojpuri is the mother tongue of more than 180 million people spread over five Continents of the Earth. Ranking by numbers of speakers, it is 10th most spoken language after Japanese and German among the world languages. Bhojpuri had its own script namely “KAITHI” which is very close to Devanagari & looks similar to Gujrati. Thousands of old official records and land documents are available in Bihar written in Kaithi which needs to be preserved. It was the official Script from the Moghul era and later became the official script of united province of UP & Bihar under British rule in 1880. The then users of “KAITHI” script were many more than Devanagari. The books / reports were being published in “KAITHI” from Lucknow, Patna, Kolkata and was even being taught in the Chicago University, USA. National Archives of Manuscripts have got more than 260 original books or documents in “KAITHI”
If enlightened saints like Kabir, Buddha and Gorakhnaath chose Bhojpuri belts like Varanasi, Champaran, Maghar, Kushinagar and Gorakhpur to spread the word of god so as Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi carefully chose Aaraa now Bhojpur Dt and Motihari a Bhojpuri area to launch his SATYAGRAHA ANDOLAN against the British rulers and got mass support. People say that Lathi in his hand was given by the people of Bhojpuri Samaj. While Bengalis fought and contributed in the India’s freedom movement by Pen, Bhojpurias fought this war through LATHIS in their hands. The Bhojpuri Maati has the honour to produce Freedom Fighters like Mangal Pandey, Chandrashekhar Azad, Veer Kunvar Singh and Chittu Pandey. The second people's mass movement in India was led by Bhojpuri Speaking Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan.
Modernization of Indian society has resulted in the need to acquire a certain type of linguistic capital for sustained upward mobility in society. In the absence of such entire Bhojpuri speaking areas of UP and Bihar are far behind in terms of development in India. The fact is these areas are deliberately ignored and has been kept out of development map of India. And the result is a volcano that is brewing in this area and has surfaced to the ground now. Our hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s brain child “Digital India” even echos that the domains of production, sustenance, promotion of any digital product, linguistic capital plays an important role.
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has given special benefits in terms of advertisement released through DAVP for promotion of Print journalism (Newspapers & Periodicals) in some Tribal, Pahari & Maithili language as well. Bhojpuri should also be included in this list of DAVP to support sustainable revenue model to promote Bhojpuri literature registered under RNI. Bhojpuri should be included as a separate language in the Census Report. This will help show the exact number and the demographics of Bhojpuri natives in our country. The fact is most of the Bhojpuri speaking people write Hindi or Urdu as their mother language. This is evident in the census report of 2001 of the Govt. of India.
Census department should be instructed to ascertain the real no. of Bhojpuri speaking people across the country.
Please Include the Bhojpuri language in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution in the next session of the Parliament, which is pending with the Union Govt. since very long. It should also be declared a Minority language and should be developed and promoted at par with Urdu. Since the Rangnath Commission for the development of Religious & Linguistic Minorities has not addressed the problems of Linguistic Minorities of the country including Bhojpuri adequately. We also demand setting up a Separate Commission for the development of Linguistic Minorities immediately.
